Meet Frances, also known as Fran. She’s a senior Visual Communications major, minoring in Interior Design and is graduating this May! If you have ever seen our yard signs around campus or have picked up one of our free t-shirts — she is one of the brilliant people behind those designs.
Tell us about yourself!
I’m Frances Gottsch and I’m majoring in Visual Communications and minoring in Interior Design. I’m from Tulsa, Oklahoma, I’m 24, and I have two brothers! I’m also a new aunt to a cute little baby angel named, Magnolia.
What is your role within OU IT?
I’m a part of the Marketing and Communications team. I’m one of the Graphic Design Interns so basically I design signage, posters, promotional materials, or anything that the Marketing Interns need.
How does your work with OU IT correlate with being a Visual Communications major?
Everything that we’re taught in school and do inside the classroom is applied to my internship with OU IT. I am doing everything that I have practiced at the School of Visual Arts but for an actual organization.
Can you explain what Visual Communications is?
Visual Communications is basically what the title is — it’s communicating visually. A lot of people use the term “graphic design” because it’s often in a 2-D format, but it’s more than that. It’s making something visually represent ideas and brands in the most effective way.
What piece of technology do you use the most and why?
I use my Macbook the most because of my job with OU IT and my major. We use the Adobe Creative Cloud suite all of the time!
What is your favorite part about working for OU IT?
As a designer I really couldn’t do anything without technology. So, I’ve learned a lot about the importance of technology and design while working here. Before I was mostly design focused, but now I am able to have an IT perspective about things!
Outside of IT what else are you involved in/interested in?
I’m the Vice President of the Graphic Design Association, I’m a part of the Society for Experiential Graphic Designs (SEGD), and also a part of AIGA, the professional association for design. It’s nice to be connected with what I’m interested in doing professionally! Since I’m an Interior Design minor I really like to focus on how design is in a space so thinking of it in a 3-D way or an environmental way.
That’s awesome. What show are you currently binge-watching right now?
I watch Seinfeld every night! I’ve already seen every episode and I enjoy having it on whenever I’m doing homework or getting things done. I also just binge-watched Queer Eye on Netflix, which I am obsessed with!
Thanks so much for talking with us! We can’t wait to see all of the creative things that you design in the future.
