Meet John Verbick. He is our Program Lead for IT Practice Spaces on the Learning Spaces Team, which means he’s responsible for all the great IT labs across campus. It also means (shameless plug) he’s the guy with the inside scoop on the Couch Practice Space opening in fall 2015! We like John for several reasons: he learns the nicknames of all the people he works with, he values the contributions and ideas of our student interns, and best of all? He’s a genuinely nice person.
We asked John some Really Important questions, and here’s what he had to say!
Where did you go to school? I completed my degrees at OU for undergrad and grad school, and also studied at the Universitat de Valencia in Spain and in Puebla, Mexico.
What is the best thing about your hometown? Great town. We have confusing street names to disorient out-of-towners like This Way, That Way, Any Way, and Which Way. All the other streets are named for plants from coastal Texas.
What is your favorite book? TV show? I’ve got too many favorite books to name just one, but Hemingway’s ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ is up there. Hugh Howey’s ‘Silo’ series is thought provoking. Currently re-reading Tolkein before introducing it to my son. Favorite shows include Parks & Rec, Game of Thrones, Peaky Blinders.
What type of music do you listen to? Currently listening to the Greencards, Old 97’s, Frightened Rabbit, Atlas Genius, Manu Chao.
What is your favorite place to visit? Colorado, New Mexico, Central America.
What is your favorite app? CamScanner.
What was your first computer? A Commodore 64. It was a thing of beauty.
How much time do you spend on your phone? Too much!
I cannot live without my: morning coffee.
Thanks so much, John!
