Meet Rachel

Meet Rachel, a Graphic Design Intern on our Marketing and Communications (MarCom) team. She’s graduating this May with a degree in Visual Communications and just accepted a full-time position as a graphic designer!

Tell us about yourself.

Hi! I’m Rachel Russell. I’m 22 and from Oklahoma City. I’m a Visual Communications major and an Art History minor.

What made you decide to major in Visual Communications?

I’ve always been interested in art. Art and design are two different things, but there’s some overlap. So, my connection to art kind of led me to design. I just found out that I really enjoyed it after taking a couple of VisCom classes!

Can you describe the Visual Communications program that you’re in?

It’s a three year program where the first year is core classes. For people who don’t know, visual communications is exactly what it sounds like — communicating visually. Most people know it as graphic design, and that’s a reference to 2-D formats, but visual communications can really be anything.

What is your role within IT?

I’m a Graphic Design Intern on the Marketing and Communications team in OU IT. I am responsible for making posters, signage, web graphics, and things like that!

What is your favorite part about being on the MarCom team?

Definitely the teamwork and the people that I work with. It’s so easy to work here with all of them because there’s a lot of diversity in people and their skills. It’s just really fun to work here!

Can you tell us about the internships that you’ve had while being at OU?

This one of course, and then last year over the summer I worked at Paycom in Oklahoma City. I was a Graphic Design Intern in their Marketing department. My duties were very similar to the ones that I do here. I was responsible for designing web graphics, posters, fliers, and magazines!

What are your plans after graduation?

I actually just accepted a job at Paycom for a full-time design position!

Yay! Okay, last question. Do you have any advice for current OU students and incoming freshmen?

I would say to just make the most of your time here. It really goes by so quickly. Four years goes by faster than you think it does. Whether it’s getting involved in clubs or programs on campus… just anything to get to know people and meet as many people as you can.

Thanks Rachel!
