Meet Senior Interns Salam and Jordan

We believe one of the most important things we do in OU IT is mentor our students and contribute to their growth. That’s why nothing makes us prouder than witnessing them thrive post-graduation!

Two of our Boomer Buzz student interns, Salam Omar and Jordan Vanderheyden, have demonstrated excellence both inside and outside the workplace. Jordan is majoring in Industrial Engineering and minoring in Economics. Salam is majoring in Industrial Engineering and Mathematics. Both students have just accepted professional positions (starting in May 2018!) (yay!), and we got the opportunity to speak with them about their time in OU IT and what they’ll miss the most.

Can you tell us your roles in OU IT?

Salam: The Boomer Buzz team hosts events in the lower level of the library (the HCLC) with the goal of engaging the student community.

Jordan: My role just as a student is to promote a collaborative learning environment and answer questions–whether related to technology, events on campus, or events we put together. I help with planning and try to involve different student organizations like the Colombian Student Organization or Women in Engineering–anything you can relate to technology.

How has Boomer Buzz made an impact on your time here at OU?

Salam: For me, it has given me the opportunity to interact with more students than I otherwise would have. It introduced me to new technologies that we use, helped me become more involved on campus, and enabled me to contribute to the student community.

Jordan: I’ve met a lot of cool people that I likely wouldn’t have met if I wasn’t involved. Whether trying to recruit students to come to our events in the library or just getting to know my coworkers, I enjoyed the opportunity to build my network and meet other students. The technology thing is really cool too. For example, before ONE ( was rolled out we got the chance to see it at a meeting, and we understood more about D2L going away and what that transition would look like.

What internships have you had while being at OU?

Salam: I had two internships in the summer of 2015 and 2016 with GE as a Manufacturing Engineering Intern in Oklahoma City. Then last summer I interned with Morgan Stanley in New York as an Operations Analyst.

Jordan: In the summers of 2015 and 2016 I was with TTI, inc., a Berkshire Hathaway company that distributes electronic components. Then this past summer I was with Deloitte Consulting.

Nice! What are your plans after graduation?

Salam: I am going to work in investment banking at Morgan Stanley.

Jordan: I’ll be doing technology consulting for Deloitte.

Last question, What will you miss the most about the Boomer Buzz team?

Salam: For me, the people. That’s an easy one.

Jordan: You stole mine! Yeah the people, but I would say that when we have our events it’s fun to recruit people. Sometimes you’re nervous about talking to people but it’s been a really cool way to meet students. You say, “Hey I know you’re busy but we’re having an event.” And then you can follow up with, “What are you studying on or what are you working on?” You get to learn about their major and meet new people. The people from Boomer Buzz have been great, but so are the other students I’ve met.

Congratulations Salam and Jordan, and best of luck to you in your future endeavors!
