Meet Sam, the IT Services team trusty student office assistant. Sam works behind the scenes to make sure the Services Team have everything they need to run smoothly and work effectively. From managing systems administration to helping with ticketing, Sam is the self proclaimed “flow helper” of the services office.
“It is a great work environment,'” he tells us. “I can honestly say its one of the only jobs I’ve ever had where I’m excited to go in every day. I’m not the most tech savvy–more of an ‘errand guy,’ but I still love the place and everyone I work with.”
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m in my senior year, well I think I am anyway–it’s kind of complicated. I switched my major to bio-chemical science after sophomore year, so I will end up being a super senior.
What were you studying beforehand, and what are you planning on doing with the new major?
I was mechanical engineering before. I took a lot of design courses in high school and really loved it so thats why I went into the major initially. I still love design, but I want to go into physical therapy. I’ve always been around PT because my dad is in the field, and I like how hands on (ha?) it is. I still plan on keeping design as a passion of mine, but I like the idea of being face to face when helping someone and seeing them progress. With design, I could be creating programs that help thousands of people, but I wouldn’t get to see the direct impact they have.
Ahh, a people person! What is your social life like?
I’m on an ultimate frisbee team and we have a lot of fun hanging out together and going to tournaments. I also really enjoy hanging out with my work friends.
If money were no object, where would you go, and would you take anyone with you?
I think I would go to Yosemite and just disappear. They have a lot of great rock climbing, and the climbing there is definitely on my bucket list. I think I’d bring some friends with me though, because you know when you’re climbing like that…
You don’t want to have to go all 127 Hours on yourself?
Exactly! But also, I think it would be more meaningful to have friends there and share it with them.
What would I find in your Netflix cue right now?
I highly recommend Stranger Things, I loved that one. And House. It takes a little while to get into, but it’s a great show. Also, I started watching this historical fiction called Marco Polo, which is about, well Marco Polo haha. I’m not sure how much is factual, but it’s really interesting. It just blows my mind that billions of people have inhabited and walked the Earth before we have, its amazing! It really makes you contemplate your own mortality.
That was really deep, man.
*laughs* Well I also watch Futurama.
It’s all about balance, right? But speaking of mortality, what is something you want to do before you die?
A personal goal of mine is to back pack through every single European country there is.
Taking on the global traveling of Marco Polo?
I suppose so! It’s amazing to me that he did so much traveling while he was my age and younger, but yes I definitely want to travel.
What would you say would be an epic one liner to end this interview?
“That’ll do pig, that’ll do.” Also if you haven’t ever seen Babe, I will make you watch it.
