IT Security Alert

IT Security Alert: Quicktime on Windows

Lynnetta Eyachabbe

What Is the Concern?

Apple has ended support for Quicktime 7 on Microsoft Windows and will no longer provide security updates for the software.  Quicktime is a multimedia technology with a built-in media player that supports a wide range of file formats. In the past it was required to run iTunes, but is no longer necessary.

Using unsupported software increases the risks from viruses and other security threats.  There have been vulnerabilities reported in Quicktime for Windows so there is an increased risk of malicious attacks and data loss with the program installed. Exploitation of Quicktime for Windows could allow remote attackers to take control of affected systems.

Who Is Affected?

Users running Microsoft Windows with Apple Quicktime installed.

What Action Do I Need to Take?

The best method of protection if you have Apple Quicktime installed is to uninstall it.

If there is a business requirement for the use of Quicktime, please review the alert so the risks can be properly managed.
